Pigna, a charming municipality in the Province of Imperia, is located in the extreme western part of Liguria, embracing the picturesque upper Nervia Valley. Situated at an altitude of 280 metres above sea level, this village overlooking the valley is a mountain jewel surrounded by evocative landscapes.
The countryside surrounding the village unfolds amidst olive groves, and as you ascend in altitude you will find lush chestnut groves and coniferous forests embracing the slopes of Mount Toraggio and Mount Pietravecchia.
In addition to its natural beauty, Pigna is famous for its thermal waters, with a history dating back to Roman times when it was part of the orbit of Albintimilium, today’s Ventimiglia.
In 1844, commercial exploitation of the beneficial thermal waters from the spring of Madonna Assunta began, with a temperature of 30° and classified as sulphurous-chlorinated.
The historic centre of Pigna, with its charming houses clinging to the mountain slopes, hosts notable attractions, including the Parish Church of S. Michele Arcangelo, the Church of S. Bernardo, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Passoscio, the Parish Church of San Tommaso, the Loggia of Piazza Vecchia and the Ethnographic Museum “La Terra e la Memoria”.
Recognised with the prestigious “Bandiera Arancione” by the Italian Touring Club, Pigna presents itself as a gem that combines natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage, offering visitors a unique experience in the heart of the Ligurian mountains.
