Just a stone’s throw from the Grand Hotel del Mare Resort & Spa, the Bicknell Cyclovia is more than just a tourist-sports itinerary; it is an epic journey linking the Mediterranean coast with the hinterland of the Maritime and Ligurian Alps, embracing both Italy and France.
A Route Inspired by Clarence Bicknell
This extraordinary route is inspired by the adventures of the English botanist Clarence Bicknell, who chose Bordighera as his home in the late 19th century. The cycle path offers a unique experience, transporting you through places that Bicknell himself explored and described in his research.
The Itinerary: From Bordighera to the Wonders of the Alps
The adventure begins in Bordighera, with an evocative train journey along the Ventimiglia, Breil-Sur-Roya, Tende route. The bikers reach the top of the Roya Valley, continuing on to Casterino and the picturesque Valley of Wonders. The route winds its way through the picturesque villages of La Brigue, Triora, Molini di Triora and Bajardo, before climbing to the heights of Sanremo. From here, you return to Bordighera via the Montenero trail network, completing an unforgettable loop.
Melosa Variant
The Bicknell Cycle Route offers a shorter but winding variant. From Passo Sanson, the route links up with Colla Langan, skirting Monti Pietravecchia, Toraggio and Cima Marta. This option avoids the descent towards Triora and Valle Argentina, offering an alternative and equally fascinating experience.
